Massachusetts Changes Daily Cannabis Allotment

Serendipity struck on 4/20 as Massachusetts Governor Melissa Healy signed a bill in which daily individual cannabis allotments doubled for Massachusetts cannabis purchasers. While the new legislation enacts larger implications for the cannabis industry as a whole, consumers will be most affected, or rewarded, by the restructured allotments. New Massachusetts Cannabis Laws

Other portions of the new legislation involve a restructuring of the Cannabis Control Commission (CCC) and increased issuance of cannabis business licenses throughout the state. The CCC is an independent commission that governs the cannabis industry within Massachusetts. The restructuring of the agency involves reducing the number of commissioners from 5 to now only 3, with an increased effort to appoint those with a strong background in public health, public safety, and social justice. The increase in license issuance means that businesses will now be able to possess 6 licensed facilities, up from the previous 3, meaning that on-site consumption, event-based use, research-based licenses will likely be popping up around the state.

The big headline for consumers though, is that you can now purchase double of what your previous daily limit was. As a Massachusetts cannabis consumer, you can now purchase 2 ounces of flower, 1000 milligrams of edibles, 10 grams of vape/concentrates, or 10,000 milligrams of tincture products. For those looking to purchase in different categories, you can think of your allotment as a piece of pie when figuring out your daily limit within the 2 ounce equivalency. For example, if you purchase 500mg of edibles, you still have half your allotment left, meaning you could still purchase an ounce of flower, or 5,000mg of tincture, or 5 mg of vapes. There’s seemingly endless combinations, but as long as you remain under the 2 ounce limit, you’re good to go.
